I love Shakespeare’s quote in Hamlet: This above all: to thine own self be true.
There’s a more modern version of it, by the Beastie Boys in the song “Pass the Mic”: be true to yourself and you’ll never fail.
We get one life per person. We all come from the same place, and we’re all going to the same place.
We don’t leave here with anything we accumulate. What’s important in life is being true to who we are.
What does that mean at IPS Realty, and for the work that I dedicate my life to?
It means core values like passion, competition, intelligence. Transparency. Caring.
You’ve got to be passionate about the work you do or there’s no point doing it. You have to care about what you do and for whom you do it. You have to want to improve things, leave the streets of Detroit and the people who live here better than when we arrived.
It’s not just about that saying, when you go into nature, leave only footprints, take only pictures. We want to improve the things and lives we touch.
Transparency: we want people to know we’re in this to make money, to earn a profit, while also rebuilding our city. We don’t have a problem admitting it. There is no shame in making money. I make good money as a real estate investor, property management company, and construction entity. That’s a great thing. I’m proud of what we do. And I’m not afraid to admit it.
That’s because I help a lot of people live a better life, and I provide a good service. At IPS Realty, one of our core principles is authenticity. That’s a natural consequence of our actions. We love what we do every day because it comes from the core of who we are.
